Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to personalise treatment of colorectal cancer and reduce the incidence and mortality rates. This is the aim of the EU-funded OperA project. We are conducting a pan-European, population-based, randomised trial to establish the value of AI-assisted colonoscopy in colorectal cancer prevention. Overall, the project's goal is to drastically improve colorectal cancer care.

The OperA project will also produce a risk-prediction tool for personalised treatment and cost-effective models of AI-assisted colonoscopy in colorectal cancer screening. OperA will also address the ethical and legal barriers to AI development and implementation.

Work Packages

  • WP 1: Establishing long-term effectiveness, the ACCEPT trial
  • WP 2: AI tool to identify cancer risk
  • WP 3: Cost-effectiveness modelling
  • WP 4: Addressing ethical/legal concerns
  • WP 5: Trustworthy and living guideline
  • WP 6: Dissemination and exploitation
  • WP 7: Communication activities
  • WP 8: Project management

Expected outcomes

  • Providing health care professionals with a safer and evidence-based clinical decision support systems for affordable treatment, including home-based care.
  • Supporting health care professionals in predicting patients’ long-term response, including adverse side effects of a specific personalised treatment.
  • Giving patients and care providers access to disease-specific communication.
  • Enhancing clinical guidelines due to novel, clinically validated and (cost-)effective AI solutions.
