About

The EU funded OperA project aims to investigate if the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute to reducing the incidence and mortality rates in colorectal cancer.

AI-assisted colonoscopies may improve the preventive effect of the intervention. Previous studies have shown that AI-assisted colonoscopies have improved the clinician's ability to detect precancerous lesions (polyps). If more precancerous lesions are removed, the hope is that more colorectal cancers may be prevented.

In the OperA project, Optimising Colorectal Cancer Prevention through Personalised Treatment with Artificial Intelligence (OperA), we will investigate this by conducting a pan-European, population-based, randomised trial in the European colorectal cancer screening population. A total of 222,000 patients will participate in the trial.

In addition to this overarching goal, we will also develop an AI tool to detect precancerous lesions, we conduct a cost-effectiveness model, and we will develop trustworthy guidelines to aid clinical decisions made by doctors and patients regarding colorectal cancer care and prevention.

We also have a specific project (WP 4) which will investigate ethical and legal barriers in AI development and implementation.

We hope this project will improve the colorectal cancer care and make lives better.
